Calvo Serer, Rafael
b. 1916, Valencia; d. 1988, Madrid
   Politician
Calvo Serer was a leading member of Opus Dei and proponent of National Catholicism, which he advocated in España sin problema (Spain, Not a Problem, 1949), a riposte to the liberalizing and Europeanizing tendencies of Ortega y Gasset. As editor of the newspaper Madrid, he moved towards support of a democratic monarchy. This provoked the suppression of the paper, and his exile in France from 1971, where he became involved with the Democratic Junta, which demanded a break with the Franco regime and the restoration of democratic freedoms.
